Aotearoa Hotel Industry Conference and Exhibition (AHICE), Christchurch
Architecture Workshop set out in 1992 to ”be distinctly of New Zealand without being parochial” We were interested then in bench marking with international projects and reaching that level of design standard. Actually after 30 years of practice I think we have the confidence now to be more parochial in our search for cultural intensification of place. Guests want privacy, sustainability, and a real connection to the land, rather than generic international luxury. I'd say the biggest single change is the shift from architecture-as-spectacle to architecture-as-restoration. Thank you Richard for the invite and the thoughtful questioning of a diverse panel, who each in their way have an impact on the quality of the outcome. I especially liked another comment from a conference delegate "you have to choose the top of the line if you want the best bottom line" #AHICEaotearoa
